Bye Bye 2020!
As we near the end of 2020, I must admit, I'm kinda happy to see it go! It's been an extraordinarily difficult year for many on this planet and I'm right there with ya! Here is the last painting I did which reflects the difficulty of staying away from home till next year so we don’t spread the deadly virus! I used some amazing and affordable digital brushes in the Procreate App on my iPad to create it. All brushes mentioned in this blog and many free items are available at Holly Pixels website by clicking here. Studio Kitsch's SnowGlobe, SnowDust, Letterland and InLights brushes are each available by clicking on those titles to see her gorgeous, sweet, "kitschy" sets. The texture was added using Lisa Glanz’ TextureBrushes (click on each title where it is underlined in this blog to view).
We'd hoped to be spending more time with our new grandson - and all our grandchildren - this year, but the pandemic forced us to hold off while we wait for the vaccine. As I write this blog, I dream of the day when we can travel in our RV to visit family and friends across the country. Intermixed with those dreams of travel are dreams of spending hours together with family and helping out where we can with this newest grandson, since his family resides close by. The below art was created using a Christmas Chalk Procreate brush set by OkayAnnie. This set, like all those in this blog, is available on HollyPixels.com here
As for my art, it's been an amazing year! I started the year with the dream of creating a stamp set and was very fortunate to instead have been approached by an online shop that makes and sells stamp sets. The cost to setup, produce and market stamps is so high, this is the perfect alternative!
They purchased some of my images and are working on a set that is planned to make an appearance in Fall of 2021. I'll keep the rest of this a surprise but will share more when the time is right.
The Merry Christmas painting above was created using the ChristmasChalk set by OkayAnnie.
This trio of snow globes was created using Studio Kitsch’s SnowGlobe brush set. Although I created the 3 characters shown here, this brush set actually has its own set of cute characters like a penguin, Santa and others. This means that no drawing is required!
Anyway, in addition to getting closer this year to having a stamp or two made from my own illustrations, I have been very fortunate to be asked to join the Creative Team of the extraordinary Holly Pixels as an "Ambassador." I've been interspersing some of the digital products made by amazing illustrators who sell on Holly Pixels' online shop into my own art and have created one art piece each month since last May using a wonderful iOS app called "Procreate" which allows me to draw on my iPad and hone each painting into a fun, whimsical piece of art. You can view more on this in my previous blogs and on my Instagram account.

Her website HollyPixels.com has a marvelous freebies section called "the vault" which holds a myriad of wonderful treats, the best of which is a free activity guide, filled with color swatches, a month of doodle prompts, drawing lessons and more. The above and below mandalas are some of several I created as part of the “Holly Doodle” series I did this December using Holly Pixels prompts available in her Freebie vault. I was also asked to join the Creative Team of the previously mentioned, sweetly creative shop named "Studio Kitsch Designs" (@StudioKitschDesigns), who’s brush sets I used in several of the above art. The owner is super talented and I've been very fortunate to have been invited by her to use her amazing products to create lots of new digital art, featured on my Instagram Account under the somewhat predictable handle, @BarbaraHauenstein. I was very lucky to have met this marvelously thoughtful, gifted, dear lady and it's been a joy watching her super creative thought process as she gifts the world more and more beautiful art and endearing products. Yet another happy event from 2020.

I plan to highlight those groups more next year.
I am still working on Inktober too! That'll take me into 2021, I'm afraid. It's another picture story and although I'm enjoying the crisp illustrations because I've been inking it on my iPad (no eraser marks - yay), I've been taking perfectionism to a whole new level so it's taking me longer than before. The story itself is a mystery, of course and has a little to do with current events. Its somewhat nonsensical, like ones that I've done before it, although I guess "whimsical" sounds better, ha ha!
The below happy flower art was created using a foundation I made from Studio Kitsch's brush set "Fall Frenzy" at Holly Pixels online. I loved adding some of my signature faces and grunge to this lively digital drawing!
I love posting my art but it's impossible to get the same resolution by simply downloading it on the other end. To add to that, I typically watermark it and post it at a reduced resolution to preclude theft, as we all know that is rampant these days with all the digital art out there! Should you want a full resolution copy in a format of your choice to use for yourself, I'm making it available for purchase using your Paypal account at a price you deem fair, starting at $10 per piece. Time to remember that its the last week of September!
Hello dear friends!
As I began reflecting on how 2020 is going so far, I realized that September is almost over and we'll be entering a new month soon. With the crazy pandemic, if feels like time has done some strange things! Sometimes I feel like it's moving very slow and other times it seems to race by. Do you feel the same way? How are you spending your time these days? I continue to create art, primarily on my new iPad 11 with it's wonderful magnetic Apple Pencil. There are many great YouTube Tutorials out there that detail how to use the iPad and Pencil with a wonderful ios app called Procreate, so I've been watching them all and learning as I go.
Last month I wrote about my new affiliation as a Brand Ambassador with HollyPixels.com and how I create an art piece each month using products from designers who sell in the Holly Pixels online shop. In August, for the theme "School," I created this painting featuring an old schoolhouse. School openings have been big in the news lately as we try to balance safety with the need to educate our children. Not easy decisions. I much prefer creating art to making decisions like that! In the end, I know we're doing the best we can, and that is the most important thing we can do. Have a look at @HollyPixels on Instagram to see more of Holly's beautiful posts and products.

Today, I have more news! I am now on the Creative Team of Studio Kitsch, who's owner is an amazing artist/illustrator/entrepreneur with super creative ideas and products! I've been making and posting art lately on Facebook and Instagram using them and WOW, are they fun to use! They are simple for the novice to use and for the seasoned artist alike! Here's my latest creation which used her Monster Mash Scrapbook Kit in the iPad app Procreate (something I'd not figured out how to do before this). This is available to everyone along with other fabulous art products at HollyPixels.com. You can follow @StudioKitschDesign on Instagram too! She's been designing many types of art products that are easy to use for a while now so check her out on the internet just by searching for the name as well. Lots of fun art to look at any time day or night. I enjoy using her art as a foundation or blueprint that kickstarts my creativity and lets me spend more time adding details. I'm looking forward to a wonderful scary Halloween and hope you are too!

Happy August: Holly Pixels & the Space Dragon
What a crazy, pandemic year we're having! I pray that you're all staying safe and hope you're creating because it really does help!
I'm very excited to announce that I accepted a position as Illustration/Lettering Ambassador for Holly Pixels, a wonderful creative presence on the internet who teaches iPad art, including digital lettering, planning and illustration. As an Illustration/Lettering Ambassador, I create at least one illustration each month using products from Holly Pixels' website. Holly is a wonderfully creative soul who not only sells amazing products - everything from Procreate Brushes to enamel pins - but also gives free and paid lessons on iPad lettering and art and gives free products away! She has many tutorials on YouTube. I have been using her free brush ("Durango") for a couple of months and find it just like using a fountain pen when I use it with my Apple Pencil and my new 2020 iPad Pro 11, only cleaner and easier! I urge you to get an account on her site for free to start enjoying her free lessons or investing in her paid tools and products.

Easter Freebie, no April Foolin!
April Greetings Dear Friends!
We've been on an interesting ride since March with all that's going on in the world, but one thing is for sure - creating art will take our minds to a magical place! It's a wonderful pastime for those of us who are staying home in isolation right now.
I created this fun bunny-art on an iPad app called "Procreate" and I want to share it with you free, for your personal use. I love drawing and coloring using Procreate but it's also fun to print my drawings and color them by hand. This time, I've created 2 drawings plus some Spring and Easter greetings on one page. If you'd like to color these, just tap or click on the page and download it to your computer or other device then print it out.
Tip: Although you can print it on regular printer paper, I prefer using heavier paper. My favorite is Epson Premium Presentation Paper Matte. It's a 44 pound paper that prints colors and black lines crisply. Even if you use regular printer paper, you're sure to have fun coloring these two bunnies!
I'm also posting a photo of the two cards I created from this using Copic Markers. Colored pencils will also work well. If you print to a heavier paper, you can use watercolor pencils or watercolor.

We work on exercising, eating right and keeping busy with our projects. I'm also calling and texting or emailing friends and family to check on them and let them know I'm thinking of them. And of course, using social media is a great way to stay connected.

With all the issues surrounding our health risks from the COVID-19 Virus right now, I escaped into my whimsical world and drew up some St. Patrick’s Day art. I combined it all into a DIY printable, foldable St. Patrick’s Day card and am giving it to you free of charge for your personal use to help take your mind off this pandemic and to celebrate this fun green day and the first day of spring which happens in a few days as well. I hope it keeps your hands busy and brings a little happiness into your reality. After printing it, fold it in half, then in half again. Next, color it and glam it up with things like colored pencils, sequins, washi tape and crystals. It’s almost Valentine’s Day so I made a Valentine’s Day Card just for you to print on regular printer paper. Feel free to download, print, fold in fourths, and color this card. I’ve found alcohol markers and colored pencils work quite well. I plan to make a coloring tutorial video so please subscribe to my “Barbara Hauenstein” YouTube Channel and make sure your notifications are set to “on” so you can be notified when it’s posted. This card is for your personal use, not for commercial/resale purposes. I hope you enjoy it!

In December, I gave you a Freebie Fox-Trio Drawing, in January, I added details to it. Here it is, altered/colored! I hope you like it. I used an app called Procreate on my iPad to create and color it. I discovered a fabulous company called RetroSupply.com online that has amazing, reasonably priced Procreate brushes which add wonderful texture. Even though I used the Procreate App, you can alter/color this by hand. How did yours turn out? Please email me with a photo, or tag me on Facebook or Messenger so I can enjoy your art as well. Happy New Year 2020!
Welcome to our new decade!
How was your December? Mine was busy but full of wonderful family get togethers, new art and lots of December fun!
First, I was asked by my dear friend, Fairy Girl Gema C, to join her and a few of her friends in her “Fairy Girl Gema Art 12 Days of Christmas 2019” Facebook Group event by creating art for her prompts from 12 through 24 December. Here’s a snippet-collage of the 8 pieces I created.
Second, I was one of ten winners of the Christmas Cafe Feature in the Maremi’s Creative Cafe Christmas Feature! Here’s the badge I was awarded and the art piece that was chosen (called Angel Snowflake Mandala). I was given some special printable tags which were embellished with my art - such a thoughtful present and memento of this occasion! I highly recommend this lovely group. After a beautiful Christmas with these amazing events, I thought about my resolutions for this first year of the new decade. It was obvious I needed to take my digital note taking to another level by using a digital planner, so that is number one. I also needed to organize my art room, old photo files and closets so the word of the year for me is “organize!” I’ll be sharing more of this journey and my art this year but for now, I’ll leave you with a new coloring page. This page expands upon the triple-fox drawing I posted in my last blog. Have you had a chance to download it and do some "alterations” yet? I drew in clothes for the foxes and faces on the mountains, plus sweet-faced flowers. You’re welcome to download this page as well and color/alter it as you’d like. I’ll also color and alter it more then post it in about a month along with a new coloring page.

How was your December? Mine was busy but full of wonderful family get togethers, new art and lots of December fun!
First, I was asked by my dear friend, Fairy Girl Gema C, to join her and a few of her friends in her “Fairy Girl Gema Art 12 Days of Christmas 2019” Facebook Group event by creating art for her prompts from 12 through 24 December. Here’s a snippet-collage of the 8 pieces I created.
Second, I was one of ten winners of the Christmas Cafe Feature in the Maremi’s Creative Cafe Christmas Feature! Here’s the badge I was awarded and the art piece that was chosen (called Angel Snowflake Mandala). I was given some special printable tags which were embellished with my art - such a thoughtful present and memento of this occasion! I highly recommend this lovely group. Happy December! Giving you foxes to color!
Hello Dear Friends!
It’s a wonderful time of year for many reasons. December brings with it many holidays as well as the onset of Winter. Although many of us have already been feeling it, Winter hasn’t come yet. It starts December 21, 2019 and ends March 19, 2020. In honor of this gorgeous month and the gift giving many of us do, I’ve created a coloring page for you to download and alter for personal use! The foxy little siblings on this page ask that you please finish their outfits as well as add details to the rest of the page. Be sure to set your printer to print this “Landscape” (not Portrait) so you print the full page. I also plan to decorate it and unveil my final artwork in (gulp) January 2020! I remain very busy this month. In addition to working to finish 3 (yes THREE) picture story books for publishing in 2020, I am enjoying buying and making gifts, cards and preparing for a large Christmas dinner for my family and friends. As I do this, I reflect back to the blessings in my life and thank everyone of you for your sweet support! I look forward to many more wonderful events in 2020!

Happy Thanksgiving! Color my Thankful Girl!
Happy Thanksgiving!
I hope you all are doing great this beautiful November. As we rapidly approach Thanksgiving in the U.S., I count my blessings, and they are many. I pray that you also see those many wonderful blessings in your everyday lives, whether you’re an American friend or an International friend. And please know how much I value our friendship, wherever you are!
In honor of this Holiday, I’m posting a coloring page. Although she was done as part of my Inktober drawings and has a story all her own, she’s representative of this Thanksgiving because of the great and wonderful bounty she carries on her head so here I’ll call her the Thankful Girl of Many Blessings.
Here in warm and sunny San Diego, I’m working on my Christmas cards and slowly finishing my October picture story book. You may find my art on Instagram (@BarbaraHauenstein). InkTober Time
The last time I posted a blog was during the start of Daisy Yellow Art’s Index Card A Day (ICAD) Challenge in early June. I am happy to say that I completed all 61 days of prompts and, along with that, now have the beginning illustrations and snippets of my book, “Farley’s Fairies and the Mystery of the Little Cottage.” It was a lot of fun and I will post here to let you all know when I’ve published the picture story book and make it available on Amazon online.
It’s now October, time for the 31-day InkTober Drawing Challenge and for another Barbee picture story mystery! This one features 3 sisters, Inky, Pinky and Dinky and several of their closest friends, ha ha! I’m posting my illustrations in the InkTober 2019 Public Facebook Page which you can join by searching for Inktober 2019 in Facebook. My art is also on Instagram (@BarbaraHauenstein).
I’ve had several requests for the free use of my illustrations and so will post occasional coloring pages here that you may print and color yourself, but I cannot make them all freely available since I spend many hours creating them and am publishing books for sale. Those posted publicly are watermarked and reduced in size so won’t print out the same as those in my books. With that said, my intention is to provide coloring pages here that are clear and free for personal use, although they still carry my copyright. I encourage you to alter the pages you print here (and from other art, as well) with rubber stamps, ephemera and more! I like to print mine on 110 lb. card stock and play with them by coloring and altering them. I intend to create videos on my process soon. Please let me know how yours turn out in the comments below!

I have begun my favorite challenge, Daisy Yellow Art’s Index Card A Day Creative Challenge which runs for 61 days, from 1 June through 1 July. I create art every day and this year am writing and illustrating a mystery called “Farley’s Fairies and the Mystery of the Little Cottage.” I write a little tidbit every day and at the end of 61 days, I should have quite a story, ha ha! I hope I can put it all into a little book, complete with coloring pages when done. You too can join the ICAD Challenge by reviewing the prompts on the Daisy Yellow Art website and joining the FaceBook Group to see and post your art. Click HERE for the web page. It's not a competition, it's a creative challenge. As written before on my blog, I've learned alot about my art during these challenges and made many wonderful life-long friends from around the world! This is my fourth year and so far, I've finished every one. It does take dedication and I've found that trying to limit my time daily helps, although I'll admit that some days I do more than planned. Although I draw my cards, many collage and create more abstract index cards. It's all good!

I located a wonderful guide on the internet to drawing the human body and so have been practicing, although I found that I prefer the wonky folk-art style humans I've been drawing. Hello Lovely Friends, I have great news!
BOOK 2 - 2018 ICADs
After your wonderful encouragement and requests, I spent several weeks compiling my whimsical index card art from the Index Card A Day (ICAD) Creative Challenge last summer (2018) into a full color, 6x9 inch paperback book titled, "Book 2: 61 Days of Barbee's Index Card Art 2018 with Special Tips and Techniques" and it's now live on Amazon.com and available for purchase! Each page has a uniquely upbeat and positive piece of "happy art" that is sure to leave a smile on your face and your heart filled with joy! I must thank my dear husband Bruce for his support helping me prepare these books for release. He's my rock and my inspiration!
BOOK 3 - SKETCHBOOK - COLORING BOOK
To go along with Book 2, I created, "Book 3: Medium Companion Sketchbook for Barbee’s 2018 Index Card Art" to enable you to color and alter the 61 black and white sketches derived from the colored index card art in Book 2. You'll be smiling as you alter each page by coloring and adding your own touches.
It's not your mother's coloring book! Just like Books 1 and 2, it's a fun 6x9 inch book that you can take with you in your purse or backpack. But unlike Books 2 and 3, it has 61 pieces of sketchy black and art for you to personalize as you like. The paper is the same as with the first 2 books so I recommend you try using colored pencils, gel pen and markers, although everyone's results will differ. You can also use rubber stamps and glue on collage pieces (any type of paper/ephemera) using a glue stick. Don't forget to add lots of scribbling and doodling as well and come up with creative ways to alter the art!

MerMay 2019 is here!
Hello my dear friends!
As we say HELLO to May, I want to let you all know that there's a wonderful art event that happens every May! It's called "MerMay" and it's a fun creative celebration created by illustrator-extraordinaire Tom Bancroft a few years ago. The End of December Already?!?
Warm New Year's Eve Greetings Everyone!
"Happy Faces:" This face surrounded by flowers (many of which also happen to have faces) was another piece created for the "Art Play Prompt" given by wonderful Artist Carolyn Dube. The prompt was to use a post note and was given on 2 December. I created the background and colored in the elements the same as "BIG WISHES" then outlined and added details with a black Copic Liner Pen and a Signo White Pen. The large flower face on the bottom right didn't turn out the way I wanted, affording me an O.O.P.S. (Carolyn's acronym for an "Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly"). By using the post note, I was able to cover up the face I didn't like and draw a new face over the top of it on the post note. You learn something new every day!
It's official, New Year's Eve is here! I hope you had a wonderful year. I had an awesome one! With lots of help from my sweet, smart husband, I published my first book, "Book 1: 61 Days of Barbee's Index Card Art," which has my collection of 2017 summer index cards from Tammy Garcia's Daisy Yellow Art Index Card A Day (ICAD) Creative Challenge. Tammy's an amazing art guru who's led us on a multi-year journey exploring how many ways we can dress up an index card to address her imaginative prompts! My first book is available here in paperback or Kindle, if you haven't already picked up a copy. It's a positive, happy book and will leave you feeling inspired! I am working on Book 2 now which will hold my collection of 2018 summer index cards, as well as special tips and techniques. By the way, Tammy Garcia's fantastic Daisy Yellow Art website, available by clicking here, has many free and paid workshops as well as several prompt series and a plethora of instructional, fun videos, so be sure to check it out and sign up for her year-round free Facebook Group.
With the New Year comes our hopes and dreams for 2019. December was a busy month but I took time to do a few pieces of art which I'll post below on this last day of the year. These were for a Facebook Group I belong to called "Rediscovering Your Creativity Through Mixed Media Play" led by another of my favorite mixed media artists, the very creative, Carolyn Dube. If you don't belong to this group, I recommend you sign up. It's free and fun! Carolyn's website which you can access here also has a bounty of free and paid information and workshops with many YouTube Videos that are informative and fun.
The first art journal page I created in December bears the quote "Big Wishes Cost As Much As Little Ones," the idea of which came during a card I did for the 2018 ICAD Creative Challenge. Because big wishes cost the same as little ones, I have several GARGANTUAN wishes. I wish for (1) unconditional PeAcE, (2) FoOd for every living creature, (3) ShELteR and clothing enough to bring each creature comfort, and (4) LoVe to bring every creature joy and happiness - ALL of these are very much deserved by all the creatures great and small living on our dear Mother Earth. These super HUGE wishes cost as much as tiny ones, so I'll continue wishing HUGE and praying for them into, and throughout, the next year.

I created a background by rubbing several bright colors from my mini distress ink pads into my small (8.5x5.5 inch) Dylusions Art Journal with a small applicator that fits on my finger. I cut the tree top star and the snow from old book and glued them on using a glue stick. Some random stamps were added to the background to grunge it up. I colored the tree, star and snow with watercolor pencils then used a black Copic Liner Pen and a white Signo pen to add details.

"Deer Santa:" This piece was also created for the "Art Play Prompt" given by Artist Carolyn Dube on 16 December her Facebook Group "Rediscovering Your Creativity." The prompt was to use a triangle. There are plenty of triangles in here - can you count them all? I created the background and colored in the elements the same as "BIG WISHES" above and drew some ornaments, clouds and details with a black Copic Liner Pen and a Signo White Pen.

"Happy Faces:" This face surrounded by flowers (many of which also happen to have faces) was another piece created for the "Art Play Prompt" given by wonderful Artist Carolyn Dube. The prompt was to use a post note and was given on 2 December. I created the background and colored in the elements the same as "BIG WISHES" then outlined and added details with a black Copic Liner Pen and a Signo White Pen. The large flower face on the bottom right didn't turn out the way I wanted, affording me an O.O.P.S. (Carolyn's acronym for an "Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly"). By using the post note, I was able to cover up the face I didn't like and draw a new face over the top of it on the post note. You learn something new every day!
"Christmas Blessings:" This piece was also created for the "Art Play Prompt" given by Artist Carolyn Dube on 16 December in her Facebook Group "Rediscovering Your Creativity." The prompt was to use a triangle and this was the second journal page where I addressed that prompt - lots of triangles here, ha ha! I created the background and colored in the elements the same as "BIG WISHES" and outlining and details with a black Copic Liner Pen and a Signo White Pen.
